Stocktaker Franchisee in the Spotlight

Gareth Skornia – Stocktaker Franchisee Devon & South West

After 25 years’ experience running a variety of hospitality venues, for quite some time I have been planning on a future career as a stocktaker. My motivation for this, is to use my knowledge to help others within the trade boost their profitability through good stock control practices. For this reason, for the last couple of years I have been working as an employed stocktaker for a well known national company. However what I really wanted to do, is return to being my own boss and being in charge of my own destiny!

My interest in stocktaking started in one of my early bar jobs. Our stocktaker had given us a poor result, and I quickly identified that oversized glasses were causing a 5% drop in draught yield, something my manager failed to do. From that point I have always enjoyed investigating shortages and improving GP and yields, hence why stocktaking is a natural career progression for me.

Wanting to be Stocktaker Franchisee in Devon & South West, I chose a Stocktake UK franchise, as I had used their stocktakers at my previous businesses and was always impressed by them and the Company as a whole. The idea of running my own business and being my own boss, whilst having the help and support of a National Company, also seemed ideal.

It’s early days for me, but my diary is already filling with National Account work provided by Head Office and local work I have secured through my personal contacts. I’m really looking forward to the future and taking control of both my professional and personal life.

A significant attraction of being self-employed is the re-balance this gives someone used to working all hours front of house. Whilst I am keen to help as many businesses as I can, I am also looking forward to rekindling interests and hobbies that I have given up due to the pressures of work. It’s unfortunate to live in such a beautiful part of the country and not experience to the full the benefits of being here. Therefore I look forward to walking Devon’s stunning coastal pathways, snorkelling and sea kayaking, plus not forgetting to spend more time with my girlfriend and parents!

I am currently expanding my professional network and my profiles can be found on both Linked-in and Facebook – let’s connect!
